The History

POLO® first rolled off the production line in its classic mint variety on 15 April 1948 and this year celebrates a glorious 60 years as the nation's favourite mint. It would have launched earlier in 1939 but the outbreak of war delayed it for nearly a decade. At launch there were 16 mints in a tube retailing at 2d however today there are 23.

From its conception POLO® proved to be a hit with the Great British public, recognised by its distinguished shape. It quickly established itself as the 'The Mint with the Hole' and this famous tagline is still used today.

Sixty years on iconic POLO® is still Britain's number one mint brand with approximately 20 million mints produced every day and more than 150 POLOs® eaten every second! Robert Opie from the Museum of Brands recently commented that "it is remarkable to see a brand that has created its awareness from a shape - a shape that has titillated the tongue for generations. The loveable mint with the hole has become a firm favourite with the British public."

The Original POLO® recipe is still in use today, although there have been a number of new varieties added to the POLO® family over the years including, POLO® Spearmint; POLO® Sugar Free and POLO® Fruits. POLO® Sugarfree is supported by the British and International Dental Health Association (BDHA)
